Musings on Faith Steps

2 Peter 1:5-8   For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As I read the verses above I thought about milestones or goals as we physically grow.  Once a baby is born there are expectations of what they will learn next....

 
First there are the things that are intrinsic, that should happen automatically.  For instance, babies cry when something is awry (hungry, need changed, tummy aches) shoot, they cry the minute they hit cold air for the first time!  But then as time goes on they learn to communicate with their cries.  They begin to understand what they are feeling and the responses that are provoked in others.

Then they smile, roll over, crawl, walk, learn words, run, form sentences, write, read, math, learn to drive, graduate High School and on and on.


These are expected steps in life for growth and development.  Reaching each milestone is an achievement and provides the skills needed for productivity.

When I read these verses I also thought about faith steps for spiritual growth and development.

Upon making my profession of faith, naturally I was filled with the Holy Spirit and as I allowed the Holy Spirit to permeate every fiber of my being I was also filled with Goodness.  I became a new creation and I believe others could see His Goodness in me.

As I grew in this His Goodness, this eventually became natural, a second nature.  As I felt Him move and change me my desire to draw near to Him and to know Him also grew and I pursued knowledge. 

Knowledge in action could be the definition of self-control.

Armed with Goodness, Knowledge and Self-Control..... let the race begin and Perseverance will be developed.  As I learn to stand firm and not waiver in Christ, godliness will develop.

Godliness is required to really begin to develop brotherly love as demonstrated and intended through Christ.  And once fully resting on this final step then I might get a glimpse of the Love my Father has for me.

Moving through our Christian walk successfully growing in our faith steps also leads to a fruitful and productive life in Christ.

However, just as infants progress at different rates with some never reaching certain steps, so is true for the Christian walk.

I believe that because we are human and this relationship with Christ is dynamic, filled with free-will, we tend to take three steps forward and one or two steps back as we grow.  Always progressing in our relationship with Him and learning along the way.

I also believe that each time God reveals something in us that needs to change in order to become more like Him, well the process begins at step one.  We start with Goodness and work through each of the steps which solidifies this new characteristic.

I never thought about having steps to faith quite like this, but it makes perfect sense!!  I like having this natural progression and knowing what to look for in my development. 

Thank You God once again for Your infinite Wisdom,  I love having this perspective.  Blessings for  my Father, I pray Your day is filled with Joy.  I hope I can do that, for it comes from my love for You!  Through Christ, Amen.

Those Who Oppose

 2 Timothy 2:23-26  Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

Lately it seems that I am having more ridiculous disputes than normal.  It's really strange in how to describe what is going on... sometimes it's a person's attitude, other times their words and still still other times it's the behavior.  For the most the spark is ignited over something so very small.  But once ignited my passion is fueled because I want more for them than I think their perspective is allowing. 

I know what Christ has done for me!   He has broadened and changed my view regarding all facets of life.  So when one of these moments occur, I feel this intensity welling up inside of me that recently has been bursting onto the scene with too much energy to be effective.

I have felt this ineffectiveness, frustration and ultimate conviction by the end of each conversation. 

LIGHTBULB MOMENT!!!  This a huge area that Satan has been entangling me in lately.  I feel this battle all around me.  I honestly HATE this temptation and DESPISE that I continue to take his bait. 

The Good News is that in the beginning I didn't recognize what was happening.  Slowly my eyes and heart have been opened to the entrapment.  Now I am praying that God will use this to change my heart and provide a gentle spirit able to teach.  I love how God uses everything to perfectly teach me and draw me near to Him. 

I am a serious work in progress and thankfully Almighty God has perfect patience as I learn and grow in this life.

From the passage above I see two very important messages that I need to plant deeply in my heart.

1.  Instructions for believers regarding silly arguments:  Don't take the bait!!! Don't engage in foolish arguments or quarrels, they are not leading anywhere.  Be kind to everyone, able to teach, don't hold resentment.

2.  Perspective for believers regarding silly arguments:  Gently instruct those who oppose you and hope that God will lead them to the truth.  They are trapped in Satan's snare and know no different.

The critical words for me in these verses are:  those who oppose him he must gently instruct.

ONLY GOD would come up with this.

It is impossible to instruct anyone effectively when engaging in quarrels or uncontrolled discussions.  Throughout my day, for those who create the feeling of opposition within me, regardless of the topic, I an not to engage, I must be kind, not hold resentment and able to teach.  Teaching cannot happen where I have disqualified myself because of behavior, attitude or words.

It is also not for ME to lead them anywhere, but for God to lead them through me.  The devil has them trapped and taken them captive to do his will.  This is not a battle directed toward me, but directly at God, I only need to be an available vessel for God's use. 

No one is opposing me, they are opposing my God.
I think I have viewed these moments from too small of a perspective myself.... yes, guilty as charged. 

Abba Father, forgive me where I have failed You.  Please don't let my failure and too small perspective stand in Your way of reaching those You desire to speak to.  I am so sorry for my limited view and yet am so thankful that You have opened my eyes to Your Truth.  This nature of mine that I have displayed has a deep rooted history within me, Father please seek and destroy.  I lay before You my heart and mind for You to examine and uproot from me all that is not of You.  Father I long to become all that You created me to be.  I know that with each lesson and purging of my soul I draw more near to You.  Thank You for never leaving me as I am, but forever teaching me, molding me, making me and preparing me for what You have planned.  Father I love You and desire to have a heart that pleases You.  Forgive me for where I fail and I pray I will always receive Your teachings.  Through Christ I come.  Amen

By faith _____

Hebrews Chapter 11.  The Champions of faith.  The Biblical Hall of Fame. 

I have read this Chapter before.  I have heard sermons on this Chapter.  It is impressive to say the least.  It is encouraging.

Today I found a curious message.  I'm a little unsettled as I write this, for today Hebrews 11 held a question for me.

By faith Noah
By faith Abraham
By faith Isaac
By faith Jacob
By faith Joseph
By faith Moses' parents
By faith Moses
and the list goes on.

By faith Jill?

At first I was appalled with myself!  How dare I compare myself to people with such great faith!  Who do I think I am!?!?!?

But the thought remained.

By faith Jill.....

Then I read...

Hebrews 11:1  Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

This chapter on the Hall of Famer's provides insight into what God asked them to do and what blessings came as a result.  A group of people sure of what they hoped for and certain of what they did not see.

and so I realize my thought is not appalling, I am not comparing myself to them.  God is asking me to look at how He has moved in my life.  I know that God does not change, therefore He moves today as He moved then.  And so my testimony is my faith response to Him. 

I never thought about it like this before.

God is guiding my thoughts back four years ago to have a look-see at my faith response.

July, 2008.  I felt that I was truly sitting on the very bottom of MY life barrel, depressed, full of self-pity and feeling completely alone when God asked me to be His friend, to take His hand, to realize I was never alone, would never feel alone again, that He was and would always be with me?  By faith I took His hand and grew in relationship with Him everyday, learned to hear His voice and God became my best friend.  Peace washed over me and my household.

Then God asked if I would allow Him to teach me about love and life as He intended?  I had spent a lifetime of feeling unlovable and incapable of loving another.  I had meticulously built walls around my heart that would keep me safe.  I had no idea really what God intended, but by faith I knew my God so I again agreed to follow.

God asked if I would allow Him to provide for me in love by waiting for a man by the name of Jeff Tucker to introduce himself to me?  I wouldn't need to do anything but allow Him to prepare me and to follow where He led.  The world would question, for in the world's limited vision this was not normal.  At times I even had questions!  By faith I knew my God and I accepted to follow Him.

God asked if I would let Him heal my heart?  I knew the contents of my heart and the heavy burden I felt as I carried this weight around.  I didn't know how God would accomplish what I viewed as impossible, but by faith I knew my God and agreed to take His hand and follow.  God provided a study on Healing Wounded Emotions which was a three month cleansing of my heart and soul. This was a beautiful time of God unpacking everything I ever stored in my heart and cleansing every nook and cranny.  I was truly a new creation.

God asked if I would allow Him to give me a glimpse of His love for me?  By faith I knew my God and ran into His arms anticipating what He wanted to show me.  God provided the book Captivating a Woman's Heart.  In completing the earlier study I had emptied a lifetime of pain and misconceptions AND the very first thing God did was to fill me His love.  I became a heart overflowing and my household and friends were blessed.

God asked if I would trust Him with my finances?   I was skeptical for a million reasons along with some major control issues, but by faith I knew my God and said "ok, I will follow."  He provided the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace class.  Days became weeks, weeks became months and months became years.... but except for my house payment I became debt-free!!  My household was definitely blessed by this!

God asked a million things during these years.... will I trust Him with my time?  will I  follow Him to Mexico?  will I speak openly on His behalf?  will I...?  will I...?   YES! YES! YES!!

Each "yes" continued to prepare me, mold me, teach me, God continued to reveal more about Himself.  Each "yes" strengthened my faith and trust in my Savior and I became more free with each "yes.".

And then after 2 years and one month my phone rang.  The voice on the telephone said...."Hi, this is Jeff Tucker."
My heart stopped as I realized the power of my God.


By faith I accepted, trusted and followed wherever God asked me to go or do whatever God asked of me and through my faith in Christ Jesus....

I know my God and Savior intimately.
I know that God will always give me a choice.
I understand how God loves me.
I became debt-free.
I have a life timed in His perfection.
I travelled to Mexico with my youngest daughter to find out that God doesn't have a language barrier.
I found out that God sees ME, will care for every detail and not forget about me in crisis.
I found out that God can introduce two people when He chooses exactly as He says He will.
I know that God knows me better than I think I know myself and provided exactly what I needed in a husband.
God provided in Jeff an extension of Himself to continue to teach me about Love.
I learned that fear has serious limitations and that God has NONE!!!!

Prior to this walk I lived afraid of "what might or could happen" in any situation.  That fear would hinder me in my decision making. 

Walking through life in a sold-out-for-wherever-Jesus-calls sort of way has changed me.

Fear is now more present than ever.....

I am afraid to not say yes to what God asks or where He leads.  I am afraid to miss a moment of time with Him or join Him in His work.  Fear empowers me to say "yes" without hesitation whenever God calls!

Life with Christ is exciting, adventurous, trustworthy, solid and always Good.
By faith I must follow where God leads!!
Yes, by faith I followed.  Through faith I grew in relationship and trust with my King.  My household was blessed by my change through peace, joy, laughter, wisdom and freedom.  My family grew in number from 3 to an army of 10!!!  And it continues to grow today!!! 

Since July, 2008 God hasn't stopped asking me "will I?"  Humbly, joyfully and excitedly I continue to respond with "yes.  And I continue to grow in Christ Jesus!

Today I realized that all Christians have a faith story and that we are all a part of Hebrews Chapter 11 when we say "yes" to Him.  What a wonderful and perfect God we serve!!

Thank You ALMIGHTY God for sending Christ Jesus so that I might have an oppportunity to choose a relationship with You.  Christ Jesus, Son of the ALMIGHTY God, thank You for Your obedience to the call upon Your life that I might have the opportunity to be restored unto Him and be filled with the Holy Spirit.  Holy Spirit thank You for residing in my heart and Your daily guidance that I might live the life God planned for me.  In God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit I give thanks.  Amen.

Fruit of My Faith

May I say that weekends have historically been impossible for me to show restraint regarding food.  Weekends lack routine and offer any-time-I-want access to the pantry and grocery store....  I never stood a chance at success.

BUT NOT THIS WEEKEND!!!!

Complete success and no feelings of being deprived, no sadness, no longing for food I "couldn't " have. 

And last night God even provided an opportunity to share what I have learned.

This morning's Bible reading shows me I am without question on a Good path, a Guided path and that God is leading and providing.

1 Peter 2:2-3  Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

I have truly tasted how Good the LORD is and it is redefining a major battleground in my life.  I have read this verse before, I can honestly say today that it holds a new meaning, a deeper meaning, a life-changing message for me.

Yes, now that I have tasted the life He has for me, I crave my LORD and Savior.  Though I know I have not fully travelled this path, last week provided a new-found freedom in Him.....

And always true to Himself.... God has provided guidance and wisdom for my today and the days to come.

1 Peter 13:13  Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.

1 Peter 13:8-9 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

I love this critical reminder that I need to prepare my mind for action.... this is where my battle really exists.  Be self-controlled and evaluate these choices before me to discern from the lies, and focus my cravings on the LORD, Jesus Christ.

And after reflecting on the growth in my relationship with Christ last week I am truly filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.  I am receiving fruit from my faith and my soul has drawn nearer to Him.

Life in Christ does not get any better than this.  I am soooo thankful to be a child of God.

McDonald's, Donuts & Titus

Last night at I ended my day with a TERRIBLE headache.  Thankful it was time for rest, I took some medicine in hopes the pain would be gone by morning.

Unfortunately, I slept restlessly through the night.  I awoke to my head still throbbing and now feeling UNrested!  This was going to be a long day!

I little Jill history:
Food, headaches and myself have a long history and it isn't a good one. 
I have reason for concern regarding walking into this day. 

In the past if my headache wouldn't go away, I could easily convince
myself the root of it's source MUST BE something lacking in what
I had been eating..... JUSTIFICATION, trust me I know!  But it's
what I did and by the end of the day, I had consumed everything
that my head could possibly think to crave.

I shared this with Jeff on our way to work this morning.  He asked me
a very important question:  "How did that make you feel?"  Wow, that
was an eye opener.  My answer was "miserable" and I rarely got rid
of the headache on top of it!  There's something to plant in my head. 
Hmmm

So, back to my morning.

I knew with my head feeling this way, I would be easy prey for Satan today.  However, after the last two days of study and Bible reading, God has positioned well to make different choices.  I am armed!!!

And so, before my feet hit the floor I went to God in prayer, seeking Him to empower me in every conceivable way through my faith in His Son, Jesus Christ so that I would be strong enough to face what this day would hold.

Friday is McDonald's Day each week.  With my headache it would have been so easy to fall back into my old ways and convince myself that anything deep fried or loaded with carbs would surely help and if not, well it would taste good!!!

But not today!!  Today I chose the Fruit & Yogurt Parfait.  It was really good.  My head still hurt.  I can't change that.  But what did change was I felt good, good about my choice!

I was prepared for the rest of the day since I had a bag full of wise choices.  I was feeling empowered and confident.

AND THEN.... out of nowhere it's doughnut day at work and I am sure there is a wonderous spread of them on the kitchen counter!  ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?!?  DOUBLE UGH!!

I saw Marni's super-fresh looking cinnamon roll on her desk.  The inside looked amazingly soft and gooey.  "Oh Father I can't resist this, please help!"

I didn't go anywhere near that kitchen.  I might even send someone to get my lunch from the fridge.

But then cross paths with Cathy in the hallway and she has a doughnut on a napkin.... she might have well just waved it under my nose or why not just offer me a bite?!?  WAIT A MINUTE.... Cathy NEVER has a doughnut!  What's up with this!?!?

Oh I know where this is coming from.....

Thanking God, I realize it's time for a morning snack and my banana was waiting for me in my office.  I don't think a banana ever tasted so good!!!

But I also realized that Satan was not going to stop.

As I began my Bible reading, I asked God for help.  I needed to hear from Him, I needed strength, guidance, words of wisdom for this day.  I needed Him in a BIG way and I asked Him to speak to me through today's Bible reading.

I was reading in Titus today and I had never read this book before and so I'm not sure what I'll find.

Titus 1:1a-3a ...the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness--  a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, 3 and at his appointed season he brought his word to light

I need to focus on what is TRUTH and what is TRUE.  Knowledge that comes through faith, knowledge provided from God Who does not lie and brings His word to light for me exactly when I need it.

 Titus 1: 10a, 11a For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers,  They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households

He reminds me of the deceiver and I must not listen, I must silence this voice.  This also paints the picture for me that the deciever has a multitude of forces and devices at his disposal.

Titus 3:3a, 4-8  At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures.  But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.

I had been deceived in the past, but through my faith in Christ Jesus I have been rescued from a lifetime of misery, I am new in all areas, free to make choices that draw me into a closer relationship with my heavenly Father.  This is TRUSTWORTHY.

Titus 3:15a  Everyone with me sends you greetings.

I love being part of the family of God!!!  I feel as this letter to Titus closes today, I have all of heaven sending me greetings and encouragement.

There's EMPOWERMENT!!!  I am free to go through this day choosing what is good, choosing health, choosing life empowered through Christ.

Thank You Father for lighting my way.  I see Your path clearly before me and I am choosing to follow. Amen.

My Belly is in the Bible!

This morning the study question asked me if I had ever used scripture to combat temptations that Satan hurled my way, similar to Jesus when Satan tempted Him after His 40 days in the wilderness.

Honestly I had never thought about it.  But I realized that while I had never directly addressed Satan as Jesus did with a topically relevant scripture as each temptation surfaced, I had done so in a more generic approach.

Whenever Satan has overwhelmed me with chaos, I have focused on this verse, even saying it out loud in an attempt to drown the chaos:

1 John 4:4b  ...the One who is in me is greater than the one who is in the world.

As of yesterday I realized I am entering a war zone.  Satan has run a muck with my views of food and eating habits, so much so that it had become a way of life for me and Satan was free to turn his attention elsewhere. 

By beginning the Made to Crave study, I have stirred a pot that had been on simmer for a lifetime.  Together, Jeff and I tore open a very angry hornet's nest.  Satan threw a royal tantrum in our lives yesterday seeking to throw us off course any way he could.

I don't want a repeat of yesterday, I want to continue to grow in this new perspective.

While 1 John 4:4b speaks of the power I have within me and with my faith in Christ Jesus, this morning in my "Read the New Testament in 90 Days" bible reading I read a wonderful description of what His power looks like:

Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Watch the news for even a segment or two and the state of evil in the world today is easily seen.

The HE who is in ME?   This is the HE that EVERY KNEE shall bow to someday, that will silence the evil we see all around the world today in the news, whose glory will be revealed, whose power shall reign supreme.... AND reigns supreme in me TODAY!!

OK!  I am armed with a powerful understanding of just how great He who is in me really is!!

And then in the next chapter I read a reminder of the hold I have been under:

Philippians 3:18-19 For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.

REALLY!?!?!?!  I didn't know the bible would discuss my stomach, my eating habits, that I had made food my god, mention my shame and let me know all these roads dim my destiny, build a wall between me and my Savior and lead to my destruction.

I know my salvation and eternity are secure through my faith in Christ Jesus!!  However the above verses are speaking specifically in how Satan is chaining me so that I am unable to experience the full freedom and blessing that comes from life free in Christ.

There's a WOW moment for me!!

My new vision is to be empowered by God, through Christ and filled with the Holy Spirit, to experience freedom anew as I place the Holy Trinity in their rightful position and place food where it belongs.  This is so good!!!! 

It's wonderful to have the view of where this past perspective was leading!!  To be reminded of the seriousness of Satan's tactics.  But God has more for me as I read.....

Philippians 3:20-21  But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

YAY!!!  God is ready for me!!!  Giving me the perfect view of where I was AND NOW where I am going!!!

Thank You!!  I have great power, wisdom and strength.  This battle is not mine alone, Christ is with me.


God is on a roll today because He has still more.....

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:12-13  I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Philippians 1:6   being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

I have seen God with me in a mighty way!!  I truly feel empowered and ready to face this day!!  When God teaches it is powerful and always perfect!!!

As Jeff and I move through this study and battle through temptations of food, we need to hold fast to the teachings God provides so that we will be armed to win this battle, to grow in our relationship with Christ and with each other and strengthened for what the future holds.


Abba Father, what a glorious revealing of Yourself through Your word that perfectly applies to what I am walking through.  It makes me giggle just a little to know that my belly is mentioned in the bible!!!  But what I will hold onto and am in awe over is how I could begin this New Testament reading 2 1/2 months ago and you would know the perfect timing of reading today's scripture when I would PERFECTLY need it!!  You are ALMIGHTY, ALL-KNOWING, AMAZING and WONDROUS!!!  I am so humbled and thankful to be Your child.  I am so thankful that I did not miss this teaching and You!!!  Thank you Father for moving in just the way that I need in order to see You!!  Father I am drawing my strength from You that I might persevere and run this race before me to the finish line where I will experience You anew through growing in relationship with You, through You moving among Jeff and I and freedom from chains that have bound.  I love You and this life You provide Father.  In Christ, Amen.

Food Wars...New Cable Show? Not-so-much

I wrote this post Through the Eyes of Children a little while ago.  I loved the perspective I gained as Christ taught, however.....

As I was learning it did seem more about parenting.  I understood how it could apply to me, but I wasn't sure I followed the whole lesson exactly.  Can I just say that "God is so very Good!?!?!"  I may not have seen how to apply the teaching then, but I am thankful that I have this lifeline for today!!!

I need to be honest.  Yesterday, my husband and I started a bible study called "Made to Crave."  It's focus is on shifting your attention/ time/ energy away from food and toward God.  Yesterday I was enlightened to see that I had allowed food to become an idol and as a result I had elevated food above God.

This morning I read:
Ephesians 2:3   All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

Satan has been using food to wage a war against my soul.  When I look back on my history with food I do feel like I have been an object of  Satan's wrath in this area.  I always felt so confused and never understood why I did the things I did when it came to food choices.  An area of my life that lacked control.

Simply put, God wants all of me.  God doesn't want me to turn to food hoping for comfort, God wants me to turn to Him knowing I will be fulfilled.

As basic as this idea is, I have just now begun to grasp it.  And now God is asking me "how will I respond?"

In this bible story Mark 10:21-22 the "one" thing I am lacking, at least at the moment, is self-control.  I have been choosing to indulge in Satan's offerings and enticements instead of seeking God.

When I think of giving up something, I am immediately chased by thoughts of what will life be like without "that" something.  I have done this repeatedly in prior weight loss attempts.  Never giving way to let Jesus fulfill the cravings of my soul.

To date, I have yet to find success in my old ways.  I have been the man this scripture speaks about. 

UNTIL NOW!  Now that I have a new perspective, I have new vision and new choices.  God so perfectly armed me with His teaching to guide the way and to encourage me as I travel this path.

Mark 13:16 And He took the children in His arms, put His hands on them and blessed them.

I am His child, too!  When Jesus asks me to choose Him, seek Him, to turn away from past choices, "to come follow Him" I am responding with "LORD, here I am, I choose You to fulfill me!"

I know that this scripture in Mark also applies to me..... Jesus is waiting and when I seek Him, He will put His hands on me too and He is waiting to bless me as I follow Him.

That gets me really excited and jumping for joy at the prospect!!!  To feel free in a new area with Christ.... I can't wait!!!

But just in case I have some issues along the way or start to think that maybe I am missing something as I leave my old ways behind, I can hold onto the words I imagine the children would say to the rich man...

"Whatever He asks, DO IT! DO IT!  You don't want to miss a second away from Jesus!  It will be worth it, nothing else matters!!"  Christ's cheerleaders.... yes they would be a squad of children!  I love that I have my own cheering section!!

Father I don't want to miss a second away from You.  Until now I didn't realize I was doing this, Father forgive me.  I want You to have all of me, I want to keep nothing from You.  I am the best me, when I abide in You.  Father thank You for this teaching and preparation weeks earlier so that today when I begin a new journey I see that You were already waiting for me, knowing what I would need.  And just as You knew weeks ago and provided for today, I know that today you are preparing me equally for the remainder of this day and tomorrow.  Father thank You for Your Son that I may have this relationship restored with You.  Oh, Jesus, thank You for Your obedience to the Father's plan, that I may have life everlasting and be filled with the Holy Spirit.  Thank You Holy Spirit for residing in me and guiding me each step of everyday.  Forgive me where I do not bring glory, honor and praise for what I have received and continue to correct me and draw me closer to You.  Through Christ I come, Amen.

Lesson Learned.... I pray!

Romans 8:5  Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

I realize that what I am relating this verse to is a stretch given the context in which it is written.  But what I learned when I read this verse I don't want to lose sight of, so I am just going to follow this path.

I am human.  Very human.  Daily I am reminded of my limitations, short comings and all out failures.  Yes, I am human.

My human-ness was born into a sinful nature.  Not an arguable fact, I must keep this thought always at the forefront, it's not going to go away.  This nature will attempt to lead me down stray paths and to assist me in taking my eyes off of Jesus.  This sinful nature of mine can be very dangerous.

So where am I going with this? 

My husband and I went on vacation March 30 and returned April 3.  Just a quick trip Friday to Tuesday.  I knew that I struggled on weekends in general to complete my daily bible readings as I read through the New Testament in 90 days, so to be gone for five days was a cause for concern.  If I got behind five days I knew I would never complete my goal.

Oh what to do?  I wanted to keep on track with my readings, this was a priority.

Then on Tuesday, March 27 I had an "AH - HA" moment.  If I doubled my readings each day before we left I would be right on track when I returned.  EXCELLENT.

And that's what I did.  All caught up in bible readings, suitcase packed, double checked for toothpaste and deodorant.  Camera?  Check!  Bible?  In the suitcase, check!  All the important things... Ready, set, go!

However, since we returned from our trip the whole bible reading strategy that I implemented before we left had really been tugging at my heart.  Seemed odd I thought, after all I was caught up and on track!

Now look at the last part of that verse:  "those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires."

I realized that those who are truly living out this verse with their minds set on what the Spirit desires can only do that as they focus DAILY on our Creator and our Savior. 

Reading ahead took away my daily time with God Almighty and the Son of Man.  HOW COULD I?

God doesn't operate on a my plan, schedule or brilliant ideas.  He has specified what is right and good for me everyday.  His plan remains in place in sickness and in health, at work and at rest, in quiet times or chaos.... I need to seek Him, learn from Him, pursue Him passionately EVERYday. 

How could I possibly live in accordance with the Spirit and have my mind focused on the desires of the Spirit if I don't visit with the Father daily!??!?!?!


UGH!!  I hate it when I do things like this!!!

But then I read: 
Romans 8:9a  You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.


I am SOOOO thankful when I learn and grow through my flawed thinking and failure.

The Spirit of God does reside within me.  He is living in me, moving and teaching, opening my eyes, leading my path and correcting when needed.

Now I fully know why the fact that I was "caught up" on my reading was creating some troubles for me.  I prepared for vacation by reading ahead and packing my bible..... but reality was, I failed to actually take Christ with me by seeking Him each day.  He was with me, I saw Him everywhere, I was thankful..... but I did not pursue a two-way relationship during my time away.  I allowed my time away to include time away from God.


I know that sounds nuts to write something like that, but that's exactly what happened.  And as a result I opened the door to my sinful nature.... a life with my eyes not focused on my LORD.

And then come the consequences that always follow all choices.

My heart had moved from excitedly looking forward to see what message I would hear from God each day, to viewing my reading time as an item on a checklist.  I had lost a special connection in my listening to God and until today, I hadn't been able to hear my Father's voice.  It began to feel like I would never hear from Him or write His teachings again.

My sinful nature is always sitting close by just waiting for an opportunity to lead me down a stray path in the most disguised manners.  Very dangerous.

I am so thankful that I am not controlled by this sinful nature, but that the Spirit of God leads me, guides me, teaches me and corrects me.

Abba Father, I am daily growing in this "free will" you have provided.  I know that you have given this because you desire a relationship and I abused that during my time away.  Father, forgive me.   I made completing my daily reading a priority, my agenda & schedule a priority.... not You.  I see how that if I had made You the priority I would have continued to grow in You each day, I would have grown in self-discipline and character.  I gave my sinful nature an opportunity and it ran wild.  Had I known the consequences of what I was doing I would have made a different choice.   But honestly Abba I didn't think about what might result at all.  I missed out on my daily reading and Your teaching, on my time with You, and I wasn't available for You to work through to touch those You placed in my path.  I love You, Father, and am so thankful to hear Your voice again and to feel my heart jump at my reading time once again.  Abba, thank You for this most excellent lesson and I want to plant this deep in my heart so that this importance will grow mighty roots and forever change my relationship with You.  Abba I love You.  Amen
